In my last blog post, I talked about Turning Impossible Circumstances Into Profitable Business Solutions. In this program, I share with my students a few techniques for solving their biggest challenge and teach them how to turn those solutions into profitable businesses.
Today, I want to talk to hotel and resort owners about a huge challenge that they might not be aware of. The threat of going out of business. Now this blog post primarily towards my Belizean audience. But this is a threat that all hotels and resorts face globally.
Now I know you might be thinking, well aren’t all businesses at risk of going out of business? And yes, that is true. But what I want to share with you is the threat of going out of business, due to a bad online reputation.
In this blog post, I want to share with you an example of a business right here in Belize, that went under due to a poor online reputation. In as little as 2 years, a great business, went out of business and I will share with you what you can do right now to prevent the same from happening to you.
A Little Introduction…
But before I do that, let me first introduce myself to those of you who are new to my blog. My name is Tiffany Simpson and I am a Business Development Specialist, Certified Google Analytics Specialist and blogger here at TiffanySimpson.com. I met a crossroad in my journey as an entrepreneur when my son was diagnosed with autism. I have also developed Speaking Autism, which is a program that creates personalized learning apps for children with autism, to help with speech and social skills development.
But what I am most thankful for, is the breakthrough my son has experienced. Today, he is 10 years old and is an entrepreneur and a programmer. He is the creator of The Games Space and an instructor at the Belize Coders Academy. And if you read until the end of this post, I will tell you more about the launch of his newest business and the vision he has to help hotels and resorts improve their business and transform the tourism industry in Belize.
I hope that introduction gave you some insights into who I am and what my mission and vision is for helping business to grow and meet the needs of their customers. Now back to the story.
How Tropic Ferry Went Out of Business
Before I explain to you what you can do to fix, improve and maintain your online reputation, I want to give you a real example of a business, right here in Belize, that went under because they were not able to manage their online reputation.
While I cannot disclose in this blog post, whether or not I believe they were victims of malicious intent, I will provide you with facts on how easy it is for negative online reviews to sink your business in a very short time.
Tropic Ferry, was a water Taxi service in Vista Del Mar, that provided a ferry service from Ladyville to Caye Caulker and San Pedro. The service took a hit in 2016 when a flood of bad online reviews put the company out of business. Now there are other things that any company will need to manage to ensure that they are in fact satisfying the needs of their customers and offering them value for their money. In any case, there needs to be balance in any situation. Growing and moving your hotel/resort forward will take a clear vision and strategy.
The Two Extremes: How To Avoid Being on the Wrong Side
While their website is no longer functioning, I want to share with you a few links and screenshots of their review page on Tripvisor and other popular online forums for tourist in Belize. Tripvisor is one of the most popular online review travel platforms. Below is a screenshot of Tropic Ferry’s page on the Tripvisor website. You can click here to check it out.
As you will notice, the company had very good ratings and very bad ones. Truth is, all their ratings were saturated in the extremities. It was either very good or very bad. Now I can make this blog post long and drawn and give you a full break down and analysis of what happened and why almost half the reviews were opposite in direction. And of course, they are many factors that contribute to poor reviews such as:
- Poor management.
- Poor employee training.
- Being understaffed.
- Not having a systematic blueprint for business activities.
- Poor customer service.
- Fake negative reviews from competition.
- Rogue employees taking the business under.
- And the list goes on…
What I can tell you though, this company did not have a plan in place to manage their online reputation and it cost them their investment. So I know you are wondering, why would I determine that it was their online reputation and not the other factors that put them out of business?
Well, when you are in the tourism industry a customer’s first impression of your business is what they read online. While this example is not one of a hotel going out of business, this is a threat that all businesses in the tourism industry are plagued with. The threat of the bad online reputation.
