We Did It: Overcoming Challenges With Mental Illness

Today, I want to celebrate a milestone in my journey. It has been more than 12 years of hard work and determination, but I can finally say, that we have overcome most of our major challenges.

If you have been following my blog, you know a bit about my journey as an entrepreneur. After college, I went looking for a job and when no one would hire me, I decided to start my own business. And I failed at it.

Then, in 2011, I got some depressing news. My son was diagnosed with autism. His speech was not developing and he had no social skills. I found myself being a single mom, raising a son with autism and a wannabe entrepreneur.

For the first time in my life, I started to think that I would have to give up on my dreams of owning a successful business. I needed something more secure for me and my son.

Not only did my dreams of owning a successful business seem to be over, but having a healthy family life seem to an impossible feat as well. My son could not verbalize his needs and his frustrations manifested in the wildest tantrums. I could not take him anywhere. It was depressing, I felt isolated and cut off from society.

People had mean things to say and the harsh criticisms did not make the burden any less. I felt like I was drowning in a sea of impossible. It looked hopeless.

But one day, I asked God to show me where to apply my faith. I needed a solution to my problem and I knew that I would have to take action. I was a college graduate, and a single mom raising a son with autism. Getting a job would have given us some degree of financial “security”, but where would I leave my son if I should go to work? WHO would look after him? Would they be able to cope?

Then one afternoon, I was noticing my son’s speech pattern as he was trying to tell me something. He would open and close his mouth, while making sounds, but he was not moving his lips to form his words.

That’s when the idea came to me, to use the camera on my cellphone to record my mouth while saying his name and other words he would use at his age. I would let him sit and watch the video for hours. He would not only mimic the sounds, but he would mimic the movement of my lips as well. It took some time, but he began to say the words very clearly.

We were making progress. It was good, I felt great… my son felt even better. We could start showing our face again. This was awesome. But as time progressed, I noticed that my son was outgrowing the little videos I made on the cellphone. He needed more, he needed to understand the variation in sentence structure.

This was when the idea came to me to develop computer games that would ask him specific questions and he would be able to select his response. I thought it was genius. I had one small problem though… I didn’t know anything about building computer games. In fact, I have a degree in Math and Physics and I have never taken any formal computer lessons in my life.

I decided to make good on my bright idea. I headed over to YouTube for some lessons in game development and 4 weeks later, I created my first game using Adobe Flash Professional. Not only did the games work, but I was also able to create several businesses selling educational games and mobile apps. I also won several awards for my  tech start-ups. Success Comes in Pairs

So, I guess you are wondering how my son is doing, right? He is doing exceptional. And now that we are this far along in our journey, I can safely say, that the key to my success was always hinged on finding a solution to help my son overcome his challenges with autism. My success, is his success.

He can now face the world with confidence, because he can express himself. Today, he is 9 years old, with autism and he is the creator of The Games Space. The Games Space is a vlog that showcases my son’s love for computer games. Each week he showcases his favorite games or places to visit. Some Final Thoughts…

Today, I would like to offer you some encouragement. Despite all the challenges you are faced with in life, there is one thing that you should always remember: never give up. It is sometimes easy to just throw in the towel when life starts throwing hooks and uppercuts. But when you do give up, what will become of you?

Are you ready to live a life of misery, to wallow in despair for the rest of your years? Will you not be sorry and regretful, spending your life thinking about what could have been if only you kept going?

Remember, the ability to achieve anything in life requires you to go through challenges and changes that will help you grow into something better.

Many of you, my readers have asked for tips on how to improve your online business or blog. Without any further ado, here are 9 steps you can take right now to help you improve your online business or blog.

How To Improve Your Online Business or Blog

Step 1: Re-define your goals

It might be best if you use a piece of paper, but jot down where you expect your business to be in the next few months. You will need to include

  • Numerical milestones, like:
    • Revenue
    • Traffic
    • Sales Volume
    • Subscribers/followers
  • Non-numerical milestones, like:
    • Influence
    • Design
    • Happiness
    • Lifestyle

Re-defining your goals will help you to determine whether or not your day to day activities are helping you to reach your goals. You may even realize that you need to make some adjustments in order to reach the intended target.

Step 2: Take a look at your home page.

Here are some questions to help you determine whether or not your homepage will have the intended impact on your visitors and get them to stick around

  1. What is the first thing you notice on the home page?
  2. Is your message clear?
  3. Have you taken a look at similar sites?
  4. Is the website easy to navigate?
  5. Is there anything missing?

If you answer these questions (very quickly), you will be able to identify a few changes you can make (if any) that can improve visitors impression of your site.

Step 3: Correct Crawl Errors.

Here is an excellent article on how to fix and correct crawl errors.

Step 4: Get your website graded.

You can have your website evaluated with a free tool like Website Grader. Simply enter your domain name and it will tell you what you can do to optimize your website. Go ahead and try it…

Step 5: Don’t be afraid to ask questions.

Sometimes you are uncertain about what to do next and that is OK. Reach out to someone with more experience than you and ask for advice. One major benefit of asking questions, is that it can help you to reduce your learning curve and expedite your progress.

Step 6: Shoot a video

Shoot a video and talk about anything related to your blog or online business. Make sure you place your url in the first line of the video and share it to all your social media networks. Check out my video below.

Step 7: Remember to thank your followers, subscribers and fans.

A great way to keep your audience’s attention is to turn the spotlight on them. Spend a few minutes each day saying thank you to the people that support you in your online business.

Step 8: Mute your distractions.

Yes, mute (turn off) notifications during your work hours. If you have a blog or if you work from home, this is very important in ensuring that you spend the time necessary in accomplishing your tasks.

Step 9: Follow up with your audience.

This can be as simple as asking a question. You can find out more about your customer’s buyer experience by asking them about the products or services you offer online.

The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber: Lessons Learned

One of the books that has had the most impact on my journey as an entrepreneur, is The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber. This book was first introduced to me by Jill Sawer after a trip to East London, South Africa.

After being away from my business for only one week, it started to fall apart. I got home only to play catch up. It was horrible. Not only did I find myself juggling all aspects of my business, but I was unable to relieve the bottle neck that had been created as a result of my one-week trip to Africa.

Because my business was not automated, all the processes that should have kept my business running, stopped during that week I was away. At that time, I only had the Belize PSE exam prep game on the market. Once I got back to Belize, I had the burden of sending out license keys for all the customers who had been waiting for more than a week. And no, I was not using email to send the unlock codes, I had to send them out via text message. I had to type up each one. Not only that, I had to process the current requests at the same time. it was a nightmare.

One day I mentioned the problem to Jill. Jill is a consultant with the World Bank. She encouraged me to read The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber. She explained how this book will help me to put the necessary systems in place so that my business can run even when I was not there to pay attention to it.

Lessons from The E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber

In the E-Myth Revisited by Michael Gerber, the author tells a story about this woman who had a bakery. She made pies. She made these pies from a recipe that she got from her grandmother.

The problem she was faced with, is that she started her business to sell pies. However, she ended up doing all these other tasks in the business. Like the accounting, the cleaning and many other tasks that had nothing to do with pies.

This is the case for many entrepreneurs. They are stuck working in a business in which they are the ones doing all the work. The minute they hire someone, things start to fall apart and they immediately shrink the business so that they can continue to do all the work themselves. Like they say… “If you want it done right, you have to do it yourself”.

This was me, after my trip to South Africa. And this is the life many entrepreneurs lead right now. They are stuck juggling all the tasks in the business. And this creates a bottle neck in the business. The processes in the business (that keeps the business running) goes on hold every time the entrepreneur has to leave the business to attend to some non-business related activity.

I don’t want to give away too much of what happens in the book. But after reading the book, I was able to automate the process of running my software business. Not only that, I was able to create more products to put on the market, increasing my revenue, without increasing my work load.

Since then, I have created 5 more G.A.M.E. Prep games that help students prepare for standardized exams. Automation in Business And The Idea of Fool-Proof Growth Hacking

An automated business, is one that runs itself. Just imagine all the processes that keeps the business running, being done at the exact time it needs to be done, every time it needs to be done. An automated system may include human interference or out-sourcing, but the process of the business is done in the exact sequence, over and over again. With each sequence being identical to each other. This is how automation in business, works.

A business that is completely automated, does not have room for empty activities that lead no where or accomplishes no purpose. Within this system, everyone knows what they need to do and when they need to do it. There is no endless meetings and complicated policies to observe and no time wasted just being active. A business that is automated, allows for the business to grow. Just imagine that everything is done on time and there are no back lags. How to Build An Email List Quickly

One of the biggest mistakes that most entrepreneurs make, is not building an email list from the start of their business. Many are not aware of how crucial it is, to their business to have an email list. An email list can literally take your business to the next level. In this blog post, I will show you how to build an email list quickly and how to combine that list with automation to turn your business into a money making machine.

How to Build An Email List Quickly

In this case study, I will show you how I was able to build an email list quickly for a product I was about to launch. In this example I will show you how I was able to use a blog post and Facebook ads to build a list of 100 potential customers in less than one week.

In this example I will use G.A.M.E. Prep for Jamaica GSAT. This is a computer game and mobile app, that helps students living in Jamaica, prepare for the Grade Six Assessment Test (GSAT).

The first thing I did was write a blog post around the subject of GSAT past papers, since I know that parents will be looking for past papers for their children to use for practice. In the blog post I explained that my game contained past questions in all four subject area (Math, English, Science and Social Studies). I also explained that my game included the answers and problem solutions.

To engage readers, I included a video that showed how the game works. Check out the video below.

Then, I offered readers a free copy of the program in exchange for their email address. Once I had finished my blog post, it was time to start running ads to drive traffic to the blog post. I posted the article on Facebook and boosted the post for $10. In 5 days, the post was shared 106 times, received 55 likes and 5 comments. In addition to those interactions, I got 102 emails from parents whose children are sitting the GSAT exams this year. Best part is, the game was not yet complete. I used a demo to build my mailing list so that I already have a database of potential customers by the time the product was finished and ready for the launch.

This is a great way to build an email list quickly… but more importantly, this is a list of highly target leads. All the email addresses I received were from parents, or from someone who knew a child who would be sitting the exam later this year. It is very important that you are able to target the people who are interested in your product. Why is an email list so important? An email list is a great way to automate the process of following up with potential customers.
